MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

                 Reference Services Coordinator
     
Mississippi State University Libraries seek a leader to shape and guide
pro-active reference and research services
in a highly electronic environment and to manage a department committed to
improving digital and traditional
scholarly support. The University Libraries' major goal is to become a
member of the Association of Research
Libraries by adding excellent new faculty and by providing its communities
of users an ongoing, creative,
technologically advanced library program.   The particular challenges of
this position are to develop innovative
service models for research, reference, consultations, and remote user
service, and to develop new, targeted
services to meet changing information needs of faculty, researchers,
undergraduate and graduate students.
Central to the mission of the department are individualized instruction and
consultation for learning and research,
linking faculty, students and researchers to library resources and services
in an increasingly comprehensive
networked environment,  leadership in the use of networking technology,
resources and service enhancements.
The Coordinator of Reference Services is responsible for planning, training
and evaluating (6) six reference
faculty and (1.5) one and one-half FTE staff, and will work closely with the
Library Instruction Services
Coordinator and others in Public Services as part of a team effort to
provide excellent reference service.  This
is a tenure track position and reports to the Associate Dean for Public
Services.
 
Required:  The successful candidate will possess an ALA-accredited MLS and a
second master's degree or PhD;
documentation for  at least five years of progressive and  responsible
managerial experience in a Reference Department
in academic or research libraries; demonstrated proficiency in the research
process and in establishing goals and
objectives related to research; skill and vision in developing and providing
a full range of reference services; ability to
implement new services and programs; knowledge of and skills in the use of
networking technology and electronic
resources and services; and a desire to play a visible role in the academic
community.  Candidate will also demonstrate
ability to coordinate department goals and plan new initiatives to develop a
strong and visible public services program.
The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills,
openness to the challenges facing reference
services, commitment to the service mission of the library, a collegial
management style, and an ability to delegate,
inspire, and support staff development.  Evidence of active contribution to
the library profession is highly desirable.

12 month appointment.
 
Rank/Salary: Associate Professor; $50,000 or commensurate with
qualifications and experience.
