At the ALA Annual Meeting, Monday, June 28, 1999, 9:30 -- 11:00 a.m.,
at the Marriott New Orleans, Balcony M, the LITA SSSIG (Secure Systems &
Services Interest Group) will present:

"Authentication Update: Short Reports from the Field."

1. Remote Patron Authentication: the low-tech, free approach.
Monica King, Ouachita Parish Public Library, Monroe, Louisiana, will
describe a Perl solution that authenticates users via patron barcode and a
passworded web page.

2. "Just Good Enough" Security.
Dan Lester, of Boise State University, will describe how they authenticate
off-campus users against their OPAC patron database and conceal the
redirection of the user to the vendor's site, thus avoiding the hassles of
a proxy server.

3. Certificate-based Access Management of Web Resources, or, Welcome to
the Bleeding Edge.
Ariel Glenn, Columbia University, will describe several CGI-based and
certificate-based projects at Columbia.

4. John Stromquist of Obvia Corporation will describe his company's Remote
Database Access (RDA) Service.

These four, 15-minute informal presentations will precede a brief business
meeting of the Interest Group, during which the membership of the SSSIG
(defined as anyone-who-shows-up) will:
a. elect/draft/kidnap a vice-chair-elect, and
b. begin planning for a program or preconference at Annual 2000 on
authentication and
security issues in conjunction with the LITA Distributed Systems IG.

All are welcome to attend. Please mark your calendars and tell your friends.
