Amazing Smart Card Aids Filtering Dilemma (Library Journal, July 19, 1999)

Amazing Smart Card Technologies is tackling the filtering issue plaguing
libraries with Smart Guardian, a system that uses an advanced library card
similar to an ATM card that is fed into a workstation. The card is encoded
for each individual patron, so, for instance, adults can insert their card
and have full access to the net, while a child's card can be programmed to
provide only filtered access at the same workstation. This innovation
transfers the onus of responsibility directly from librarians to parents,
who would then decide their children's level of access. There is also an
"images off viewing" option that blocks a web site's pictures while
displaying text. The card can also show records of debt and book reserves
and act as a debit card for printing and other fee-based services.
