        Digital Media Librarian/Instructional Technologist
        --------------------------------------------------

Rice University, a private university, is seeking a highly motivated 
individual committed to working closely with users and exploring 
creative new ways to provide services.  This person will work 
primarily on providing innovative approaches to using information 
technology in the development of services for the scholarly community.  
The successful applicant will work closely with the Fondren Library, 
the information technology division, and the Center for Teaching and 
Curricular Innovation.   Candidates with a strong combination of 
bibliographic, technical, and interpersonal skills are encouraged to

participate in the development of leading edge library technologies 
in a team setting.  Current projects include expanding the services 
of an Electronic Text and Image Center; tailoring user interfaces for 
the integrated library system; further development of an Electronic 
Reserves service; the digitization/creation of multimedia projects in 
coordination with the Special Collections Division; further 
development of a GIS/Data Center, and the cataloging of electronic 
resources.  The Digital Media Librarian/Information Technology 
Specialist provides campus leadership for the use of library 
resources and technology in the classroom.   

Responsibilities include:

Provide collaborative leadership with university faculty and 
technologists to invigorate teaching and research through infusion of 
innovative instructional and information technologies and models; 
work collaboratively with the campus audio-video group on Rice 
television (RTV) related projects, focusing on music, video, imaging 
and other digital applications for the arts; develop and/or assist 
with the development of computer programs that support library 
applications or deliver services on the Web; institute a digital 
library management system; coordinate digital tool development for 
users & producers; coordinate overarching metadata systems for 
electronic objects (including cataloging).  

Reports to: Fondren Library's AUL for Public Services. The Digital 
Media Librarian/Instructional Technologist will participate in the 
development of goals and measures of project success with both 
Fondren Library's Digital Resources Steering Committee and the 
governance group for the Center for Teaching and Curricular 
Innovation.

Qualifications:
---------------
Bachelor's degree in a humanities or social sciences discipline; 
working technical knowledge of world wide web technologies and tools; 
creative approach to the development of new services; commitment to 
responsive and innovative service; experience with computer 
integrated media resources; ability to articulate technology strategy 
to non-technical clients; excellent understanding of the teaching and 
research process; knowledge of current and emerging technologies, 
including presentation technologies and the use of multimedia in an 
academic and research environment.

Flexibility and ability to work independently in a rapidly changing 
environment and in cooperation with a variety of faculty, students 
and staff with differing levels of technical expertise; ability to 
interact positively and productively with library colleagues, students, 
faculty and staff; excellent analytic, problem-resolution, and 
trouble-shooting skills; desire to work in a technologically 
challenging environment.

Preferred:
----------
MLS or MA in a humanities or social sciences discipline; three years 
experience applying information technology, preferably in higher 
education; ability to assess faculty needs in a diverse academic 
environment; expertise in using/developing web-based courseware;  
knowledge of metadata and cataloging practices and standards; systems 
experience in an academic library; experience or training in Unix 
and/or Linux and/or Windows NT and/or Perl programming languages. 

Salary/Benefits:
----------------
$40,000 minimum, commensurate with experience and qualifications; no 
state or local income tax; 21 benefit days; TIAA/CREF; health and 
life insurance; tuition waiver.
