Hanan,

Here at the National Institute of Standard & Technology Library our public
PCs are running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. We do several things to protect
them from the public:

Through password-protected CMOS, we disable A-drive from the boot-up process.

Use Norton Anti-virus protection.

Use Fortress 101 protection version 4.0, build 94, to block users from My
Computer, Network Neighborhood, and all other areas of the system. We do
allow users to Telnet and run Web Browsers. (Fortres is easy to turn off/on
for the purposes teaching your customers, which you mentioned was
important. In NT just press CTRL-SHIFT-F, key in your Fortres password,
click on "Disable All Protection" then exit. Your unit is then completely
unlocked and ready to use for teaching purposes. Repeat above and click on
"Enable Protection" to turn protection back on.)

Tweak the registry to log public users on automatically, since people will
turn your PCs off then on again.

There are other tricks too to keep your units secure. I'm sure others will
post their thoughts.
