[WEB4LIB] PC-based web server

I'd recommend a "real" server if your web site is mission-critical, as ours
is. Our web site gets comparable use to our online catalog, because our
website acts as a gateway to all our online indexes and full-text sources.
We're crippled without it.

Look for:
-	redundant power supplies
-	RAID (with a dedicated controller, not merely software RAID)
-	redundant NICs

	Two other good options:
-	buy from a vendor who offers a 3-year 7x24 on-site support program
-	consider a "failover" system where two servers share the same load
and one can seamlessly pick up if the other dies

Subject:	[WEB4LIB] PC-based web server

Hello,

Our library is looking into several options for future hosting of our
website. One thing we would like to consider is converting a regular
desktop PC into a web server. Has anyone done this, and if so, what all is
involved? Any cost estimates for undertaking a project like this? Is this
even a good idea to consider?

Thanks in advance for any replies.
