Usually you can right click on them for a menu of some sort, and in the
preferences or options menu there will be a checkbox for "always run", or
"autostart" or something of that sort.  What are the applications you are
trying to disable?  Perhaps someone on the list can help you with it.  For
example, to disable RealPlayer's taskbar icon is just what I described
above (I think the option is "Close & Disable", which presents you with a
warning that it "will not always be available").

I personally disable all that add-on stuff that appears in the taskbar,
because I don't like it, and have a sneaking suspicion that my PC runs
better because of it (just my humble opinion, no hard data to back that
up though :-).
