Web Development Librarian

The North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of  Web Development Librarian  in the  Digital
Library Initiatives Department.   The successful candidate will be a
creative designer and implementer of World Wide Web services and resources
for education and research.  Digital Library Initiatives brings together 7
librarians and 5 technical and support staff to advance the Libraries'
ambitious agenda in the digital arena.  The department works closely with
the 15-member Systems Department, which provides technical support to ensure
ongoing operation and maintenance of digital library components. 

Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the head of Digital Library Initiatives,
assumes library-wide leadership for creating and advancing an innovative,
visionary Web presence consistent with the mission-critical role of Web
technology for digital resources and services.  Catalyzes, supports, and
collaborates with other library departments to create Web-based programs, 
services, and resources.  Implements and leverages emerging technologies for
Web operations, such as Java, powerful Web searching and indexing tools, and
Web site management and assessment software, to further instructional and
research programs and to facilitate access to digital resources and
services.  Directs 3 technical staff  with expertise in graphical design,
content creation, and programming to create a distinct, user-responsive
graphical and content identity, implement Web technologies, and integrate
Web access with other delivery mechanisms and digital resources.  Serves as
Chair of the Web 
Innovation Team.  Works with other library and campus-wide groups and
collaborates with faculty, students, and academic computing colleagues to
shape NC State's information environment.  Participates in library planning,
serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams, and is expected
to be active professionally. 

Qualifications
Required:     ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in
information science or related field.  Relevant professional experience.
Demonstrated leadership in creating and implementing innovative World Wide
Web resources and services.  Command of software technologies used in Web
creation and operation: HTML authoring; site management and assessment
tools; gateway/interface toolkits for access to bibliographic and other data
via database interface mechanisms.  Thorough knowledge of evolving Web
environment and Web related standards issues.  Substantive knowledge of
electronic and multimedia resources and technologies.  Understanding of the
mission of a research university and of the changing educational
environment.  Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate
clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Evidence of
effective collaboration with faculty and students. Ability to lead and excel
in a team environment. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional
development.  Preferred ::   Experience directing staff and other resources
to create innovative information technology services and resources.

than 26,000 current serials, and has a total annual budget in excess of $18
million, with over $7 million allocated to collections.  The NCSU Libraries
is the lead server site for NC LIVE, a multitype library initiative which
provides citation, full-text, and other digital resources for public
libraries, community colleges, and public and private academic institutions
throughout the State.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, and  the
Center for Research Libraries.  Duke University, the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and NC State form
the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources
approaching 12 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than
$22 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, not
less than $40,000 for this position  Librarians have academic status without
tenure or rank.  Benefits include:  26 days vacation, 12 days sick leave;
health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state, TIAA/CREF
or other retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life, 
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.  Tuition
waiver program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is
available.
