Librarian: Coordinator of Reference/Instructional Services

The Rensselaer Libraries invite applications for a Coordinator of Reference
and Instructional Services to lead a team of seven librarians. The
Coordinator reports to the Director of Libraries and Information Services
and must be comfortable in a highly automated, networked environment, and
dedicated to team development and collegial interactions.

Overall responsibilities: Provides leadership on both an individual and
team basis, and supports innovative development of new reference and
instructional service models. Coordinates and implements planning efforts
and project development. Provides administrative accountability for
Reference/Instructional Services personnel and units. Supports, and
identifies resources for, initiatives consistent with the strategic plans
of the Libraries and Computing and Information Services, and with
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's priorities for curriculum development,
research, and entrepreneurial activities.

Specific responsibilities: Acts as an advocate for the
Reference/Instructional Services team, representing it on the Library
Management team. Serves as a liaison and communications channel between the
team and other library units. Manages personnel, staff development, and
performance appraisal procedures. Working closely with the Coordinator of
Collection Development and the Collection Development Council, identifies,
evaluates and selects reference tools and materials consistent with the
Libraries' model of access to distributed information resources. Keeps
current with Rensselaer's curriculum and research priorities. Coordinates
the library instruction program working closely with the Information
Services Librarian, bibliographers, and Institute faculty and
administrators, to provide traditional and electronic instruction for all
disciplines. Provides reference service, participates in instruction and
may serve as a bibliographer in an area of subject expertise. Performs
other duties as assigned, including participation on various library and
university committees and task forces.

Qualifications: Required, an ALA-accredited MLS and at least five years of
increasingly responsible professional reference and instruction experience
in an academic library. Knowledgeable in information technology. Evidence
of successful supervisory experience. Leadership qualities and team
building skills, and an established record of project management.
Excellence in organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
Established record of professional involvement. Energetic, positive, and
enthusiastic about working in the Library of the 21st Century.

Minimum salary: $35,000
