A recent web4lib posting carried notice of a white paper prepared by the
Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), Clifford Lynch, editor. Titled
"A White Paper on Authentication and Access Management Issues in
Cross-organizational Use of Networked Information Resources", it is
available at

http://www.cni.org/projects/authentication/

This is a good starting point for those seeking to understand this complex
issue. The paper is broken into five sections: Introduction, Defining The
Cross-Organizational Access Management Problem, Evaluation and
Analysis Criteria, Approaches to Access Management, Conclusions.
Plus, an Appendix: Notes on the State of the Art in Available Software

As Sara Brownmiller said, "Patron authentication is a big problem for all
of us right now." This paper should help.

We have a number of web based periodical databases (IAC, SIRS, etc.)
to
which we need to provide remote access for our students and faculty. I
understand that somehow we need to create a database of our users
which
can be based on their library barcodes. Since the vendors are
authenticating via our ip addresses, how can a remote user "grab" one
of
our ip addresses and send that to the vendor? Where can I learn about
how to do this?
