Hi! Has anyone checked or are we all placing inappropriate approbration. If
I remember correctly, AltaVista.com existed before Digital introduced the
   search engine with this name.

By all rights, they should have changed the name of the search engine once
this situation was discovered. Again my memory could be wrong, but I do
believe that AltaVista.com decided to live with the situation rather than
   sue -- a praiseworthy decision.

If you check closely, you'll see that altavista.com forwards its
search queries to altavista.digital.com.

Essentially, the folks at altavista.com are enjoying a free ride
and a free opportunity to sell advertising space off the fine
work by the people at DEC who created and maintain the AltaVista
search engine.
