Web developer stats

I've been trying to find statistics on the number of webmasters/web
developers/web consultants and have found this to be an elusive search.
I've tried the business, tech,  and marketing databases on Dialog,
consulted with Dialog support for further ideas and done some searching on
the Web.  I need current (1997-98) numbers.  I am not interested in
e-commerce as much as I am the people who actually design, build and
maintain sites, whether they be  independents or inhouse.  Any help on
this would be greatly apprciated.
