"There is No Such Thing as Information"

"The more we try to get a grip on information, 
the more it slips through our fingers like a ghost. 
Information, in fact, is the ghost of meaning, 
and our society's worship of the ghost 
signals a continuing loss of meaning."

Stephen L. Talbott has worked full-time with computers 
since 1980 as a technical writer and software developer. 
For the past several years Mr. Talbott has been senior 
editor at O'Reilly & Associates, a leading publisher 
of technical books about computers. In 1995 O'Reilly 
published Mr. Talbott's book, The Future Does Not 
Compute: Transcending the Machines in Our Midst. 
This was one of the three or four books that initiated 
the highly public and controversial reassessment of 
networking technology, following the public's initial 
rush to the Internet. It was named one of the "Outstanding 
Academic Books of 1996" by the library journal, Choice, 
and an "Outstanding Book of the Year" by UNIX Review. 
Mr. Talbott is also the publisher of one of the 
most respected online newsletters, called NETFUTURE, 
focusing on technology and human responsibility and 
is a frequent and popular public speaker on this 
subject.

Stephen L. Talbott travaille a plein temps en informatique 
depuis 1980 en qualit‚ de redacteur technique et de realisateur 
de logiciel. Depuis quelques annees, M. Talbott est editeur 
principal chez O'Reilly & Associates, une maison d'edition 
d'avant-garde qui publie des livres techniques sur les 
ordinateurs. En 1995, O'Reilly & Associates a publie l'ouvrage 
de M. Talbott, The Future Does Not Compute: Transcending the 
Machines in Our Midst. Cet ouvrage est l'un de trois ou 
quatre livres qui ont suscit‚ un vigoureux d‚bat public sur 
la technologie du reseautage suite 
 la premiere vague d'adoption 
populaire de l'Internet.  La revue de biblioth‚conomie Choice 
l'a design‚ livre academique exceptionnel de l'annee 1996 
et Unix Review l'a qualifie du "livre le plus exceptionnel 
de l'annee". M. Talbott est aussi l'editeur de l'un 
des bulletins de nouvelles en direct les plus respectese intitul‚ 
NETFUTURE, qui porte sur la technologie et la responsabilit‚ 
qu'elle sous-tend. Il fait souvent des allocutions, 
tres appreciees, sur le sujet.
