Symposium Announcement: The Development of Subject Specific Web Sites

Some of the most important resources that can be found on the World Wide
Web are subject specific Web sites. These sites are often created by
professional associations to keep colleagues abreast of association news,
conferences, new publications and research, training workshops, and
members' e-mail and institutional addresses; the sites may also publish,
or hyperlink to, other information resources that concentrate in
specialized areas. Examples of the latter include The Romantic Chronology
and the University of Michigan Documents Center.

In an effort to educate faculty, administrators, librarians, and
publishers about the growing importance of subject-specific Web sites, The
Gelman Library of George Washington University is sponsoring a symposium
on this topic. The symposium will be held April 21, in Gelman Library,
Room 202, from 4:00-6:00. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Clifford
Lynch, Executive Director of the Coalition for Networked Information.
Other speakers include:

Dr. Deborah Everhart, Co-Director of Labyrinth, a medieval studies site
Dr. Michael Goldberg, Executive Director of the American Society for
   Microbiology
Kate Wittenberg, Editor-in-Chief of Columbia University Press and Project
Director of Columbia International Affairs Online.

Speakers will discuss why they developed their sites, the tools they used,
and the objectives that determined the structure and content of the sites.
Symposium participants will receive Web development aids that will assist
them in the construction of a site.

The symposium is free and open to the general public. No registration is
required. For more information, contact:
