ASSISTANT DEAN FOR PUBLIC SERVICES

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Assistant Dean
for Public Services at the University of Houston Libraries.

Responsibilities: The University of Houston Libraries provide a dynamic,
service-oriented, and highly-automated environment. The Libraries offer
public access to over 80 local and Internet-accessible electronic
information resources on over 120 workstations. These resources were
accessed over 832,000 times last year. The Assistant Dean, under the
general direction of the Dean of Libraries, provides creative leadership
for the organization and management of the
library's technologically advanced and customer-based Information Services,
Branch Services, and Special Collections and Archives. Coordinates all user
service programs, establishes service policies and performance
expectations, and plans new services. Administers a division of 18
librarians and over 50 support staff with direct management of three
department heads. 

Requirements: ALA-accredited Master's degree required. Evidence of successful
administrative experience in a dynamic public services environment in a
major academic or research library; demonstrated planning, management, and
interpersonal skills; excellent analytical and communication skills; and a
knowledge of emerging information technologies and applications to
libraries. Ability to work effectively with faculty, students and library
staff. Initiative, creativity and organizational ability required. 

Salary: $60,000. Excellent benefits package, including health, dental, life
and disability insurance; choice of retirement programs including
TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available; release time to take a
class up to 3 hrs/week; no state or local income tax. 

Library Information: The Libraries are a member of the Association of
Research Libraries, hold over 1.8 million volumes, with a current materials
budget of $4.2 million. Total staff includes 46 professionals and 170

The University of Houston campus comprises 14 colleges and schools offering
close to 80 degree programs with an enrollment exceeding 31,000 students,
7,200 of whom are enrolled in graduate studies. This institution is a
Carnegie Research II university.
