Counters

I had occasion to visit some library Web sites recently, and I was
dismayed to see that many sites sported those all-too-ubiquitous visit
counters. One site was apparently proud of the fact that they have been
visited an average of 7 times a day since June 1996 (and I wonder how
many of those hits were library staff showing their friends...). If I
were them, I doubt that I would trumpet the fact that hardly anyone uses
the site.

So please, those of you who display counters on your pages, why do you do it?
Inquiring minds want to know...[Let's be clear that there are other
ways of both taking statistics and making them (unobtrusively)
available to those who wish to see them.] Thanks,
Roy Tennant
