Automated web page data

Web4lib Readers:

If anyone is willing to share experience with the following type of
project, I would value the input.

Said project is building a "dynamic"  web-page (table-format) which
features monthly updates of numerical data pulled from a database
source. The best examples of such I've seen are financial house pages
showing daily stock closes, etc.

I'm assuming that cgi scripts are probably doing the back-end work in a
typical implementation, altho activex or javascript might also work (i
have cgi and javascript experience) 

In any case,  I would value any pointers to examples. templates,
resources, etc  re implementing such a project.
