                     POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT



POSITION TITLE:  Librarian for Instructional Technology

DESCRIPTION:  Virginia Commonwealth University has defined a new
position to create innovative and compelling library instructional
programs., with responsibilities for developing computer-assisted
instructional tools to promote library and Internet research skills
at Virginia Commonwealth University; teaching library and Internet
class sessions and workshops; promoting networked resources through
current awareness, publicity, and the library homepage; educating
staff about the library's digital collections; and serving on the
reference desk (with some weekend and evening hours required). 
This position reports to the head of Instruction and Outreach
Services on the academic campus.

QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS, or a masterþs degree from an
accredited program in instructional technology, education, or
computer science.  It is preferred that the candidate have
experience developing computer-assisted instruction programs and in
using software tools for creating Web-based courses; experience
with automation and technology applications in academic libraries;
at least one year of library reference desk experience; and
classroom or formal bibliographic instruction teaching experience. 
The library will be looking for an individual with a strong service
orientation; excellent oral and written communication skills;
positive interpersonal style; ability to work independently as well
as part of a team; initiative and creativity; strong analytical
skills; flexibility and the ability to accept and manage change;
ability to organize time and deliver work on deadline; ability to
meet requirements for faculty advancement, including professional
service and publication. Experience working in a culturally diverse
environment highly preferred.

ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.vcu.edu/)
is a publicly-supported urban, research university in Richmond,
Virginia.  It serves 22,000 students on both the Academic Campus
and the Medical College of Virginia Campus.  VCU is a member of the
Association for Southeast Research Libraries, the Center for
Research Libraries, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine,
and the Coalition for Networked Information.  The library has 1.2
million volumes and a materials budget of $4.5 million.  The
library is highly automated with over 300 networked microcomputers. 
The library operates its own homepage
(http://exlibris.uls.vcu.edu/library/uls.html), participates in a
statewide networking consortium for shared access to electronic
resources, and offers a variety of remote access databases.  The
library has access to advanced technology tools, including the IBM
Digital Library and Open Text software.

SALARY:  $31,000-35,000. Benefits include 24 days leave, choice of
health plans (including HMOs and dental plans), choice of
retirement and annuity plans (including TIAA/CREF); remuneration
for University course work; and paid life insurance.
