Suggestions for Netscape 3.0 vs PowerMac 6100

Greetings:

This is a question that I asked on a listserv about Netscape 3.0 having
problems with PowerMac 6100. Several people have asked me to give them a
complied list of suggestions that I received. Below is the question
followed by the suggestions.

I also found that there are 3 known incompatibilities with Netscape
Navigator 3.0:

1. Speed Doubler: Versions of Speed Doubler up to and including 1.0.1 are
incompatible with Netscape Navigator 3.0. some disk cache operations may
cause b-tree corruption on your hard drive. To correct this problem,
download the latest version of Speed Doubler from the Connectix site at:
http://www.connectix.com

2. SurfWatch: Versions of SurfWatch up to and including 1.2V6 are
incompatible with Netscape Navigator 3.0. Going to some restricted sites
will cause the Navigator to hand, requiring the computer to be restarted.
To correct this problem, download the latest version of SurfWatch from
their site at: http://www.surfwatch.com/surfwatch/netscape.html
Quit the Navigator, and follow the update's installation instructions. If
you encounter problems, you can call Surfwatch's technical support staff at
(415)948:9505.

3. Open Transport: Netscape Navigator 3.0 will not work reliably with
versions of Open Transport before 1.1. Users may experience unpredictable
hangs or crashes. Open transport 1.1 is available as part of Apple's
System 7.5 System Update 2.0. For more information, including sites where
you can download this update, see:
http://support.info.apple.cim/update/update.html

I hope that this may be able to help some other people as well. Please
feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

1. Hello Everyone:

I have a question about Netscape 3.0.

I seem to be having a problem loading this program on a PowerMac 6100.
When ever I try to open Netscape it freezes. Does anyone know of any
incompatibilities I should know about. I have tried to run help but this
does not show me anything I need to know. I do not have a problem loading
the program on any other type of Mac.

Thanks Sincerely
Jennifer

2. I don't have any suggestions to offer for solving your problem, but
I can
tell you that the problem is not something inherent in the 6100. Though we
mostly use Explorer these days (v. 2 works great, and is faster than
Netscape; *don't* try the v. 3 beta of Explorer), we've used Netscape (v.
1, 2, and 3) on at least half a dozen 6100s without any trouble.

3. Check which version of the Mac Operating system you are using. There are
known incompatibilities between Netscape 3.0 and older version of Mac OS,
apparently related to the use of OPen Transport in the Mac. I don't know
all of the specifics - but I was having the same trouble and it was fixed
by upgrading the Mac OS to version 7.5.5.

4. I saw your message on web4lib about having problems with this
combination. I run the same combination and have not had the "freezing"
you describe. If anything, I will get a Macintosh message saying "you do
not have enough memory. Try closing Word/Excel/whatever." Here are a
few suggestions.

1) Run Netscape by itself with nothing else (like Word or Excel) open.
2) Allocate more memory to Netscape 3. It is larger than version 2, and
likes to have 9 Mb of RAM, as I remember.
3) Rebuild your desktop file by pressing both the "option" and "Apple"
keys during restart, and holding them down until you see "do you want to
rebuild the desktop?" on the screen.
4) Run Conflict Catcher to see if something else is causing a problem.

Let me know if you need any more help.

5. I have had similar problems running System 7.5.0 until installing
Netscape
Defrost. If you upgrade to any of the higher versions (the current is
7.5.5) the fix is included. The freeze is an error between netscape and the
powerplug extension in 7.5.0.

6. Due to continuing freeze problems on my PowerMac 8500, I've switched to
MS Internet Explorer, with which I've had very few problems. Even on my
PowerMac 8100, I can freeze Netscape just by opening an HTML file I've
edited on my desktop. I've given up on Netscape until they come out with
a release that doesn't crash so easily. I'm tired of restarts.

7. Do a search for download Netscape and Defrost.
It won't stop your mac from locking up, but when it does you won't break
you stride. Then there is no loss of current place and no need to close
it out and start over.

Happy New Year,

Matt

8. You might try increasing the memory allocated to the application (using
the Get Info feature under the File pull-down.) I usuallu double what the
recommended memory recommends.)

9. A little more information is required. What Operating System version,
Did you delete the 'cache' directory and the 'Netscape History' file
before starting, are you using 'MacTCP' or 'Open Transport' and which
version. Is any other software (if any other software is run) having
problems.

Some suggestions in the meantime (in order of preference):

1.) Delete the 'cache' folder and 'Netscape History' file located in the
'System Folder:Preferences:Netscape'.

2.) Install Netscape Navigator v3.01, most of the bug-fixes for 3.01
were for the Macintosh-side.

3.) If you are running System 7.5, make sure you upgrade to 7.5.5 (the
latest and most stable).

4.) If you are running Open Transport, make sure you upgrade to the
final release of 1.1.2 (again the latest and most stable). In the
'Control Panel' called 'TCP/IP' and then under the 'Options' button,
make sure that 'Load only when needed' is unchecked.

5.) If you are having problems with any other software or if Netscape is
the only software run -- reinstall the System Software. Run Norton
Utilities on the Hard Drive.

If none of the above five suggestions fix the problem, please let me
know more about your system (as detailed in the first paragraph) and I
will try to help!

 10. We encountered a similar problem and thus went back to Netscape 2.*.
What we found was that Netscape 3.0 needs about 8 meg of RAM to run. The
Mac6100 comes with 16 meg generally. If you are running another program,
such as Photoshop or Word 6.0, you either run out of RAM or come close to
the brink, thus the freezes.

   Hope that helps.

11. I had also this kind of problem on my Power Mac 6100/60 (at work). It
has been somewhat solved when I upgraded my MacOS to 7.5.3. My Power Mac
will still freeze from time to time, but much, much less than previously
(something like once a week instead of 15 times a day!).

I had also the same kind of problem with my Macintosh LC575 at home; and
the same solution was applied with as much success.

12. You need Open Transport 1.1.1 to run with Netscape 3.0 on a Mac. We
had the
same problem.

13. We are running Netscape 3.0 on PowerMac 6100s also with no problem. One
possible solution---Last year we had problems with freezing & installed RAM
Doubler on all our machines, which seemed to help. Do you have RAM
Doubler?

 14. I use Netscape 3.0 on a PowerMac 6100/66AV, and have had no problems. I
suspect that if there is an incompatibility, it is not necessarily your
hardware, but some other configuration type thing. Have you tried
re-installing the program?

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I don't have much to go on.

Tim

15. Netscape 3.0 requires 12 of RAM. This is often the cause of trouble
unless you have huge amounts of real RAM (24 or better) and have given
Netscape (using GET INFO) enuf room to romp in.

Hope this helps. I am still using 2.2 on my 12MB powerbook.
