My experience with the MS office suite (including Word) and making things
read-only is that it generally kicks and screams but I haven't actually
tried making normal.dot read-only. However, I do know that you can
delete normal.dot and word will recreate a new (and presumably clean) one
next time you open it. So if you boot your computers daily you might put
a line in your startup files to delete normal.dot and minimize virus
propagation that way.
