Systems Librarian

Duke University Libraries seeks an energetic and service-
oriented Systems Librarian to contribute to the ongoing 
development of quality electronic information systems in 
a rapidly changing environment to meet the present and 
future teaching, study, and research needs of the 
University.  As a member of the Computer Information 
Systems Team at Perkins Library, the Systems Librarian 
has responsibilities for the management and development 
of a growing variety of electronic information systems, 
including the online catalog system (DRA) and various 
Web-based information services, and provides campus 
library-wide support for centralized library information 
systems.  The Duke University Libraries are active 
members of the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) 
and the Systems Librarian also participates in TRLN-wide 
projects to improve information services.

Duties:  Manages the operation of the libraries' online 
catalog system (DRA).  Provides technical support for the 
libraries' Web-based and other electronic information 
services.  Identifies and implements enhancements in 
consultation with system users.  Optimizes system 
configuration.  Investigates emerging information 
technologies and assesses their potential for library 
use.  Develops command scripts to extend system 
functionality and automate routine tasks.  Plans for and 
implements hardware and software upgrades on centralized 
library servers.  Analyzes library systems and problems 
and identifies appropriate solutions. Trains library 
staff in the use of automated technologies.  Consults 
regularly with counterparts at other Duke and TRLN 
libraries. Provides after-hours on-call support in 
rotation with other Systems staff.

Qualifications: Required: MIS or MLS from ALA-accredited 
library school; two years experience in library 
automation; demonstrated competence in programming or 
command scripting; knowledge of HTML; flexibility; 
capacity to thrive in a rapidly changing organizational 
and technological environment; service orientation; 
excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability 
to work independently and as a member of a team.
Desired: Experience with VMS and UNIX; experience with 
DRA; knowledge of PERL and EXPECT; experience writing CGI 
scripts; library or other instructional experience.
