     POWER SEARCHING ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

     Many information professionals have used the World Wide Web for
     research but not to the point where they feel that they are taking
     adequate advantage of the rich resources it offers. This course is
     designed for the information professional with a small amount of
     experience on the Web who wants to gain proficiency in using Web
     resources. Among the topics included will be a systematic examination
     of the tremendously broad range of research material available on the
     Web; the various kinds of search engines (how and what they search,
     and the advanced searching options they offer); valuable metasites;
     library catalogs; traditional online databases available on the Web;
     useful and varied reference-shelf resources such as dictionaries,
     encyclopedias and guides; etc. Tips for effective and efficient
     searching strategies, evaluating quality of resources, and optimal use
     of browsers will also be covered. The course will include a large
     portion of hands-on time.

     Randolph E. Hock, Ph.D. will be the instructor. Ran is currently a
     consultant specializing in the design and marketing of Web-based
     research services. He has over twenty years of experience in the
     online field and librarianship and has held management positions with
     Knight-Ridder Information and DIALOG Information Services. Earlier,
     he was Chemistry Librarian at MIT and the first Data Services
     Librarian at the University of Pennsylvania. During his career he
     has trained over 6,000 users of online services and is currently an
     adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland, College of
     Library and Information Services. His publications include articles
     and book chapters on online research.
