This is the first time I've heard of this. Can others confirm that
this is true?

HP LaserJet Printers say this in the manual, though I know
many of us do not bother to Read The Fancy Manual.  I
believe most others do too.  I also know from experience with
a few users who refused to follow advice that you will indeed
develop problems that are expensive to repair.
