RESPONSIBILITIES:
	The Bibliographic Control Librarian manages and coordinates the
bibliographic control activities of the Technical Services Department,  
including, but not limited to:  serials/periodicals-related activities,
cataloging/authority control/database maintenance-related activities, and
new materials processing activities.  The primary area of responsibility
is the serials/periodical-related activities.

SERIALS DUTIES:
	Manages/coordinates serials-related activities, including:
receipt/claiming/cataloging/processing of periodicals/newspapers/standing
orders; assigns/directs/evaluates the work of a serials paraprofessional;
monitors the acquisition, including ordering/accounting of serials,
working closely with the Acquisitions Unit; manages the cataloging/catalog
maintenace of new/existing serial titles; may catalog new serial titles;
manages the creation/maintenance of serials bibliographic, holdings,
and check-in data records in the Sirsi/Unicorn system, OCLC, WLN, printed
in-house listings, and cooperative union lists; manages multi-year serials
inventory, holdings revision, and retrospective conversion projects,
working closely with the Head of Technical Services and other librarians
and library staff; investigates/plans/implements potential serials
classification and barcoding projects, working closely with the Head of
Technical Services; prepares/revises/maintains serials policies and
procedures manuals; prepares/coordinates serials-related statistical 
reports with other librarians; investigates the potential acquisition/
disposition of and access to electronic serials; and may provide
serials-related public service, as needed.

CATALOGING/AUTHORITY CONTROL/DATABASE MAINTENANCE DUTIES:
	Manages/coordinates cataloging-related activities, including:  
copy/original cataloging on the Sirsi/Unicorn system and OCLC, as well as
authority control activities, and database maintenance activities on the
Sirsi/Unicorn system; assigns/directs/evaluates the work of professional/
paraprofessional catalogers; performs complex copy/original cataloging for all
materials/formats and creates/revises authority records, as needed; assists
the Head of Technical Services with planning/implementation of outsourced
and in-house authority control projects; with other librarians and library
staff, plans/implements/manages the technical services-related aspects of
retrospective conversion/reclassification projects; and manages the
revision/maintenance of cataloging procedures/policies manuals.

NEW MATERIALS PROCESSING DUTIES:
	Manages/coordinates new materials processing activities; manages
revision/maintenance of materials processing procedures/policies manuals,
working closely with the Sr. Library Technician (Cataloging); and manages
the contract binding operation (for serials and monographs), working
closely with the Head of Circulation, the Sr. Library Technician
(Cataloging), and the Sr. Library Technician (Serials).

OTHER DUTIES:
	Reports to the University Librarian, while serving as liaison librarian
to one or more departments or programs and participating in collection 
development activities; participates in Library Management Committee;
participates in Library and University committees, professional
organizations, and pursues scholarly activities, in accordance with the
University's and the Library's retention and promotion guidelines/
policies; and other duties/projects as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES:
	[Note:  Individuals must meet these minimum qualifications and be able
to explain or demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential job
functions, with or without reasonable accomodation, using some combination
of skills and abilities.]
	Master's degree from an ALA accredited program; experience in a
library technical services department; demonstrated knowledge of serials/
monographs cataloging standards, including but not limited to:  USMARC,
AACR2R, LC CONSER manual, LCRIs, LCSH, LC Classification schedules, DDC;
demonstrated knowledge of OCLC and/or other bibliographic utilities;
demonstrated knowledge of integrated library systems and automated serials
systems;familiarity with current serials trends and issues in an automated
environment; familiarity with current cataloging trends and issues in an
automated environment; demonstrated aptitude for analytical and detailed
work; excellent written and oral communication skills; a strong
commitment to teamwork and a strong service orientation; a strong
commitment to professional development; and ability to work effectively
with staff/faculty/students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & ABILITIES:
	Academic library professional experience in one or more areas of
responsibility relevant to the position; experience cataloging serials,
monographs, and/or other formats (media and computer files) on OCLC and/or
other bibliographic utilities; experience with the Sirsi/Unicorn system
(serials, cataloging, authorities, and/or acquisitions modules) and/or
other integrated library systems; experience in direct supervision of
librarians, paraprofessionals, and/or workstudy students; working 
knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Internet; and a personal/professional
philosophy consistent with the mission of Seattle University.

SALARY & AVAILABILITY:
	Salary negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience,
plus medical, dental, and educational benefits.  Salary is distributed
between a nine-month base librarian contract and a separate summer letter
of appointment.  Librarian appointment (non-tenure track) at appropriate
rank.  This is a new position currently open.  Start date is negotiable.
