Is "www" desirable in web site URL?

An admittedly very cursory look at Netscape's documentation doesn't find
any support for leaving off the www. (or even the http:// for that matter).
 It's a good rule of thumb for any company, but especially with Netscape's
track record--if it ain't documented, don't rely on it.  (Remember <!--
Comments> and multiple <BODY> tags?)
