Equations editor in Word and HTML

This is a question for a college professor who would like to create Web
tutorials for his statistics and probability classes. He currently
is using Microsoft Word for Windows, which has an equations editor
function. The equation is created as an "object" or graphic. What is the
best way for him to place such objects on a Web page? Apparently, HTML
Assistant doesn't read equations. Is there an HTML editor which works
particularly well with mathematical symbols? Would he need to turn the
equations he creates in Word into GIFs, or some other graphics format?

Any suggestions humbly appreciated.
