ALA San Antonio Internet Demos - Final Schedule

The following Internet demos will be presented at the American
Library Association midwinter meeting in San Antonio (1/20-1/22). 
The demos will be held in room 108 of the San Antonio Convention 
Center -- please note that this is *NOT* in the exhibits area.
The main Internet room will be near the exhibits, but the demo
room will be in a completely different location. Ask the Internet
room staff for directions to the demo room, and please note that
the room assignment may be changed. The correct demo room location
will be available in the main Internet room. Seating at the demos 
is limited to 50, so please arrive early to be able to view a 
particular topic.

For those of you who are not attending ALA in San Antonio, you can
vicariously participate in the fun by visiting the Internet
Room WWW site:

There should be a link from this page to a list of these demos,
and we are encouraging demo presentors to share their handouts
with those who are not able to attend by placing them in this

     ALA MidWinter 1996 (San Antonio) - Internet Demonstration Schedule

      1) Sat. 1/20  10:30am - 11:30am
     "Becoming a Listowner: How to Start Your Own E-mail Group"
     Elizabeth Thomsen, NOBLE Member Services Manager (Boston)

     This session will explain how to start your own e-mail group, and will     
     include information on the different kinds of lists, list management 
     basics and the pains and pleasures of list management. The program 
     is aimed at anyone who has ever participated in a list and wants to
     know what it would take to start their own.

     2) Sat. 1/20  1:30pm - 2:30pm
     "How to Create Your Own Homepage with HTML"
     Scott Nicholson, Univ of OK Library Student & Computer Consultant

     In this session, you will learn what an HTML tag is and how
     it is used.  You will see the basic structure of a web page,
     and how to build your own with graphics, links, and even
     a colorful background. This session is targeted at those who 
     are comfortable with using the WWW, but have done no previous 
     HTML work or page construction.

     3) Sat. 1/20  3:00pm - 4:00pm
     "Federal, State, and Local Government Resources on the Internet" 
     Shawn Collins, Computer Svcs Coord., Univ. of TN Sch of Info Sci
     
     Cost-saving measures, combined with the vast opportunity for 
     electronic information distribution, has encouraged federal, state, 
     and local governments to make information available to citizens over 
     the Internet. This session will provide an overview of resources 
     available at the federal, state, and local levels via the World 
     Wide Web. The session is suitable for beginning Internet users.

     4) Sun. 1/21  9:00am - 10:00am
     "Getting to Know Unix"
     Stephanie Schmitt, Serials Libn & Asst Prof, Univ of Mississippi

     Unix servers support the majority of utilities which provide us with 
     modern communication tools such as email, ftp, telnet, usenet, Web 
     sites and other manifestations of the World Wide Web. This demo
     will provide an overview of what a UNIX server is, what it can do, 
     and why every librarian should know a little about it. 

     5) Sun. 1/21  10:30am - 11:30am
     "Teaching International Business Sources on the WWW"
     Jeanie Welch, Reference Unit Head, UNC Charlotte Library

     A demonstration of a website that includes links to over 400 sources 
     of international business information, including comprehensive, 
     regional, and country-specific sources from both governmental agencies 
     and commercial sites. Handouts will be available on searching hints    
     and citing Internet sources in bibliographies.

      6) Sun. 1/21  1:30pm - 2:30pm
     "Indexing the Web: Spiders, Crawlers and Other Wondrous Things"
     Jennie McKee, Systems Librarian, Reed College

     Ever get lost out on the web? How do those search engines work? 
     Can they really help me find information I really want to know? 
     The answer is yes, yes, and YES. Come examine the mysteries of 
     spiders, search engines and other parts of web indexing. This session
     is appropriate for introductory to intermediate web users.
     
      7) Sun. 1/21  3:00pm - 4:00pm
     "Intermediate HTML and Editing Tools"
     Keith Engwall, Systems Libn, Univ of Texas Health Science Ctr
     
     This demo focuses on intermediate to advanced HTML Tags, including 
     HTML 2.0, 3.0, and Netscape-only tags. HTML editing tools will be
     discussed, including a list of tools and their costs. This demo        
     is intermediate and assumes a basic knowledge of HTML 1.0.
     
     8) Mon. 1/22  9:00am - 10:00am
     "Installing and Managing an HTTP Server"
     Frank Cervone, Systems Dept. Head, DePaul Univ Libraries
     
     This session outlines the steps necessary for installing and
     maintaining an http server.  The example server used is the NCSA
     shareware server, but the concepts are similar for all servers.  
     A comparison of several servers for multiple platforms will be  
     offered. Attendees should have some familiarity with basic UNIX 
     or Windows NT system administration. 
       
     9) Mon. 1/22  10:30am - 11:30am
     "Distance Learning and the Internet"
     Marilyn Moody, Director, Univ at Buffalo Science & Engr Library
     
     Interested in providing support for distance learning initiatives?  
     This presentation will demo the University at Buffalo's Web site 
     for distance learning and take a look at selected sites involved with 
     distance learning programs.
     
     10) Mon. 1/22  1:30pm - 2:30pm
     "PERL Programming for the WWW"
     Bill Gonzalez, Dept. Systems Specialist, San Antonio Central Lib.
     
     This demo is for the experienced web site developer who wants to add 
     some interactive features to his/her site. It will cover counters, 
     interactive forms, guestbooks, and conducting searches within your 
     site. Scripts for site visitation statistics will also be covered.
