We've used Lynx to convert html to ascii.  It does a nice job of 
interpreting the html, and one tends already to have a copy around.  

I don't recall the exact syntax, but you call Lynx from the command 
line with parameters something like:

lynx -force_html -nolist -underscore -dump inputfilename | outputfilename
