Head of Systems

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Library invites
applications for the position of Head of Systems.  This position has
responsibility for providing leadership in the planning, development,
coordination, and operational support of the Library's information
technology systems.   Reporting to the Library's Associate Director, the
position serves as a member of the senior management group and the strategic
planning team. The UAMS Library, with a staff of 13 librarians and 36.4 FTE
paraprofessionals, supports five schools (medicine, nursing, pharmacy,
health related professions, graduate) and the 340 bed University Hospital.

Position responsibilities include management of the Systems Division
operations, supervision of a senior systems analyst, a network manager, and
a systems support technician; working with library staff to develop and
implement information technology projects; budgeting for and recommending
purchase of computer networks, workstations, peripherals, and software;
monitoring and evaluating new information technology developments; advising
the library on information technology needs.  Library systems include OVID
Novell, a Windows NT World Wide Web server, GEAC's LIBS 100 Plus online
catalog and circulation system, GEAC's Perline/Bookline acquisition system,
a Windows NT LAN for staff, two Novell LANs for the Library's Learning
Resource Center (LRC), a Novell LAN for a campus department, and several
stand-alone CD-ROM workstations.  Information technology projects in
progress include migration to a fully integrated library system, partial
migration to OVID Unix, addition of full text files to OVID, construction of
the Library's home page, remote access to the LRC network, and development
of a single front end menu for access to the library's multiple systems.

Qualifications:  ALA accredited MLS; 4-6 years of experience managing
computing resources and information technology, preferably in an academic or
health sciences library setting; working knowledge of integrated library
systems, local area networks, and the Internet; excellent communication and
interpersonal skills; ability to work in a team environment; demonstrated
management skills; ability to organize and direct staff and to plan and
implement programs.

Faculty appointment with rank, privileges, and fringe benefits.  Minimum
salary:  $43,000.  Position available July 1.  Review of applications will
