Your CGI script can be written in just about anything, provided it allows you
to write programs that can interact with your server as specified by the CGI
standard. A lot of people use Visual Basic or C++ because they're robust
languages and many people know how to use them. Others use a scripting or text
processing language within their operating system. Perl is popular because
it's 1. free, 2. easy to learn, 3. runs on a lot of platforms, 4. is readily
adaptable to a variety of programming styles, 5. works in a wide variety of
situations.
