If the server is running on a Mac, it is possible to install ftpd, written by
Peter Lewis. Ftpd allows you to set up permissions so that users can ftp to
shared directories, upload, download, delete files, etc. The remote users just
run telnet and then open an ftp session on their machine. They do not have to
be on Macs.

I run a Mac server here, and staff working on Windows machines save their
html files, then ftp them directly to the Mac server. The staff working from
Macs use the normal Apple filesharing, but they can also ftp using the method
described.

As long as the permissions are set up correctly on the server, and user
accounts are set up for the individuals or groups that need ftp access, there
is no problem.
