Probs with background color

I see similar differences between the super VGA display at work and
the crummy VGA display at home, although I would describe the colors
as mottled rather than tartan. I suspect it is a matter of a 16 color
display dithering a color outside its palette. It may be worthwhile
to test your background on the crummiest display available and
standardize on something that looks OK there.

For my own part, pages I create leave the background choice in the
user's hands, both for compatibility across various browsers and to
avoid excess overhead (as in transmitting "wallpaper" background
patterns).

I see it as an application of Ranganathan's fourth law of library
science, "Save the time of the Reader."
